A Spotlight on the Community: Leucadia
Leucadia is a beach community located in the coastal city of Encinitas, California. The relatively secluded beaches of Leucadia lend it a prominence in Southern California surf culture.
Early English spiritualists settled in the area and gave the community its name. The name Leucadia is of Greek origin as its namesake, Lefkada (Leucadia), is one of the Ionian Islands. whose name means Sheltered Paradise or Place of Refuge in Greek. They also named our streets after Greek and Roman Gods, such as Neptune and Vulcan.
In 1881, when the Santa Fe Railroad came through town after Leucadia was settled, the railroad planted countless Eucalyptus trees thinking because of this hardwood’s strength and speedy growth; it would be equitable to use the trees for its railroad ties. They were wrong, since the wood split when dried and, therefore, became useless. However, these early Eucalyptus trees grew into huge beautiful trees along what is now Highway 101, and the canopy that covered the Highway became iconic with Leucadia and part of its history. This main street area, covered in a canopy of Eucalyptus trees, is the bustling downtown area of Leucadia. Modeled after the Main Street style Middle-American towns, Highway 101 in Leucadia is dotted with boutique shops and colorful, unique restaurants. The Leucadia 101 Main Street stretches from Encinitas Blvd to La Costa Blvd.
Le Papagayo is one of Leucadia’s most iconic restaurants. It is a cozy, upscale restaurant serving Mediterranean & Latin fusion fare including paella & kalua pork. They also have regular live music and a popular happy hour, creating a high energy and happening vibe.
Leucadia Pizzeria is a landmark Leucadian restaurant, which has since expanded and has various other locations throughout San Diego. The original location is on the corner of Encinitas Blvd and Coast Highway. They are known for their specialty pizzas, delicious pastas, entrées, subs, salads, and desserts. One of their most popular pizzas is the very unique rosemary potato chicken pizza.
Leucadia is also known for it;s eclectic art and hippie culture. The Leucadia Art Gallery is located on Coast Highway. With a constantly evolving collection, the art gallery draws a artistic eclectic crowd to the area.
The community is set on a series of bluffs that stretch along much of the length of the coastline. Its beaches are located below steep vertical cliffs lending them a relative seclusion. Leucadia State Beach and Beacon’s Beach are some of the most popular beaches.
